Van Theft Crisis: Industry Calls for Urgent Action

Short Description

Tool theft from vans has reached crisis levels across the UK, costing tradespeople an estimated £500 million annually and prompting calls for industry-wide solutions.

Details

New data compiled by Direct Line and the Federation of Master Builders reveals that tool theft from vans increased by 23% in 2025, with the average claim value exceeding £3,200. London and the South East remain the worst affected regions. Tradespeople report that repeated theft is forcing some sole traders out of business. Van manufacturers and security product suppliers have called for standardised van security ratings to help buyers make informed decisions. Several brands including Ford and Mercedes-Benz have announced enhanced factory security options for their commercial vehicle ranges in response to the crisis.
