Autonomous Delivery Vans Reach Public Road Trials in UK

Short Description

Two technology firms have received government approval to begin public road trials of autonomous last-mile delivery vans in selected UK cities.

Details

Einride and a UK-based autonomous vehicle startup have been granted permits to operate self-driving delivery vans on public roads in Milton Keynes and Cambridge. The trials will run for six months and are closely monitored by the Department for Transport. Each vehicle will carry a safety operator during the initial phase. The programme is seen as a significant milestone in the UK’s ambition to become a global leader in autonomous vehicle technology. Logistics giants including DHL and Hermes are understood to be monitoring the trials with a view to future commercial partnerships.
